Joint Lubricant Injections for Hip, Shoulder, and Ankle Arthritis

Alternative to surgery…

Degenerative joint disease, or osteoarthritis, of the hips, shoulders, and ankles causes damage to the joint cartilage, resulting in pain, stiffness, and swelling. Osteoarthritis also causes a loss of synovial fluid, which lubricates the joint and absorbs shock.

Synovial fluid naturally contains an important component called hyaluronic acid. Viscosupplementation is the process of injecting hyaluronic acid into the affected joint to help restore the lubrication lost from degenerative joint disease. Viscosupplementation is more commonly used to treat osteoarthritis of the knee, but has shown promising results in the treatment of hip, shoulder, and ankle osteoarthritis as well, although it is not FDA approved for use in the hips at this time. Therefore, insurance will not cover this procedure.

Procedure and Recovery

Viscosupplementation works best for those who are in the early stages of osteoarthritis. Hyaluronic acid, a thick fluid, is injected into the diseased joint to help replace some of the lubrication lost from arthritis. Ultrasound guidance can help to ensure proper placement of the injection. Improper placement of hyaluronic acid can result in increased swelling and discomfort in the joint, so accuracy is very important.

It is important to remember that viscosupplementation injections will not relieve your hip pain immediately. In fact, it may take several weeks to feel the full effect of the treatment. This treatment also cannot reverse any damage to the cartilage from arthritis, but may help to slow or prevent further damage. Generally, the treatment can be repeated about six months after the injection, if needed.

Benefits of Viscosupplementation

Viscosupplementation may be a good option for those who cannot OR do not want to have surgery, or cannot take NSAID pain medications like ibuprofen, Motrin, or Advil. Clinical studies have shown that hyaluronic acid injections can be as effective as NSAID medications in relieving pain, without the stomach and gastrointestinal risks associated with NSAIDs. Some patients have had more success with viscosupplementation than with steroid injections. Hyaluronic acid may also have anti-inflammatory properties, and could stimulate the body to produce hyaluronic acid on its own, according to some studies.

ARE YOU TIRED OF LIVING WITH KNEE PAIN, or ARE YOU LOOKING TO AVOID KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY?

Surgery is NOT always the answer.  There are NONSURGICAL options available!

Millions of people suffer from knee pain in this country, and many of them have been told that they need an immediate knee replacement. While it is true that some people might indeed need surgery, MOST patients have not tried all of the nonsurgical knee pain relief treatments that are available. In fact, a lot of patients are scared of surgery, and are looking for alternative treatments but they are unsure of where to go.

Knee pain has a lot of causes, but most often it is due to arthritis , or inflammation of the joint. When this occurs there is a lot of friction in the knee joint which leads to pain and swelling. Nonsurgical knee pain relief treatments are designed to reduce pain and swelling.

What is VISCOSUPPLEMENTATION , or as some people call it , a rooster comb injection ?

Viscosupplementation (Rooster Comb) Injections: These injections are a great treatment for knee pain. They are made from a natural substance called hyaluronic acid that has almost no side effects. They act like a lubricant in the knee and reduce both friction and pain. These injections can be seen advertised in the newspaper , and on TV. When they are used, they can sometimes delay or prevent a knee replacement. These injections are done in a series of 3 shots, and have no down time. This is also a same day procedure that is done in the office, rather than in the hospital.

What to Expect

– There are a series of 3 injections, 1 week apart.

– These injections have been shown to improve knee pain due to arthritis, and can sometimes have long lasting effects.

Is it covered by insurance?

Almost ALL insurance carriers (including Medicare) will cover the cost of the injections, although you may have to pay your “percentage” based on whatever type of healthcare plan you carry.  Medicare will usually cover these injections in full , with no out of pocket costs to the patient.

Stem Cell Therapy in Raleigh / Cary NC

STEM CELL THERAPY,  AT WAKE SPORTS MEDICINE:

Stem Cell Injections Raleigh /Cary NC

use of adipose tissue has taken on increasing importance in the field of regenerative stem cell therapy.  It has recently obtained FDA clearance, but as of today,  insurance companies are not covering this procedure. It makes use of the high stem cell density of adipose thought to be 1 out of every 100 cells. This technique utilizes mild mechanical forces in a closed system to produce micro fractured and purified adipose tissue graft which is ready to use in a variety of orthopedic and regenerative applications.

Lipoaspirate is a type of autograft (from your own body), same-day stem cell therapy.

This is VERY important.  Many clinics are advertising stem cell injections, but are using amniotic stem cells (called an allograft).  These are not only of lower quality, but they also carry a small risk of infection.  If you are going to consider a stem cell therapy procedure,  you should always use your own stem cells, and not someone else’s cells.

Lipoaspirates are obtained from the abdomen or love handle area through a quick liposuction procedure. The gentle liposuction takes a few minutes, and the whole time in the office is an estimated 60-90 minutes.

WHAT is the COST?

The first office visit IS COVERED by insurance, and will be a history and physical. We will discuss the process, and get the consent for the procedure.

We will then schedule you for a second visit for the actual injection. This visit is NOT covered by insurance, and will be about 1 hr long. You will need to pay up front for the injection.  Contact us at our Raleigh, NC office to inquire about our  injection pricing.

If you have any questions about stem cells , please make an appt with Dr Kanaan to discuss this further before you spend thousands of dollars.

DOES IT WORK?

Many patients are doing very well with stem cell therapy.  By this we mean a decrease in pain levels, and an increase in activities. This does not mean that all patients will do well.

Mesenchymal Stem cell therapy works similarly to PRP in that it uses the patient’s own cells in an attempt to stimulate healing. The difference is that PRP uses platelets in the blood to boost healing, whereas stem cell therapy uses the patient’s own stem cells. There are several different types of stem cell sources, including amniotic, bone marrow and adipose tissue (or fat tissue). Dr. Kanaan is currently performing injections using both adipose and bone marrow as he feels that the evidence supports these sources over the use of amniotic stem cell injections. The evidence for stem cell injections is promising with most case studies showing decreases in pain scores, and increases in activities. However, Dr. Kanaan makes it clear to all of his patients that these procedures are purely experimental, and that there are no large clinical studies that show regeneration of tissue with either the PRP or the stem cell treatments.
