WHAT IS IT ?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy is a new and cutting edge option for giving a biological boost to the body’s own healing process. PRP treatment has gained significant attention in the media lately, and has been used by several NFL, NBA, NHL, and high level collegiate players.
PRP is processed from a person’s own blood while they wait in the office. Basically, it is a concentration of platelets, which are found in the blood and which contain many factors that are essential for healing an injured or diseased body region.
WHAT HAPPENS IN THE OFFICE ?
The first office visit IS COVERED by insurance , and will be a history and physical. We will discuss the process, and get the consent for the procedure.
We will then schedule you for a second visit for the actual injection. This visit is NOT covered by insurance , and will be about 1 hr long. You will need to pay up front for the injection.
A blood sample is taken from the patient, and and then placed into a centrifuge. This separates the blood into its individual components. Platelet rich plasma is then collected and injected under Ultrasound Guidance into the injured joint, soft tissue, tendon or ligament.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY , AND DO I HAVE TO TAKE TIME OFF WORK?
Typically we will give you a 4-6 week return to activity progression to follow. This will start with rest of the body part , and then progress to full activity.
The only time off work would be for the actual injection appointment. The procedure is done in the office, and you can return to work the same day. There is no need to take time off work for the recovery period.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?
Since we are using the patient’s own blood, the side effects are no greater than any other injection that may be performed.
DOES INSURANCE COVER THIS , and WHAT IS THE COST?
This procedure is not covered by insurance carriers. Payment must be made up front prior to the treatment. We can set up a payment plan with you , if you can not afford to pay the entire amount up front.
Your insurance will cover your first consult visit to discuss your problem, and review your medical history.

WHAT IS THE EVIDENCE ?
Several basic science studies suggest that PRP treatment can improve healing in soft tissue and bone. The most promising results have been seen with chronic tendon conditions, such as lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), patellar tendonitis, and Achilles tendinitis. In a small study involving knee osteoarthritis, PRP treatment was also shown to be more effective than hyaluronic acid injection. Studies on other various parts of the body are in process across the globe.
